If you have ever been chased by the Inland Revenue for outstanding tax, you will wonder what can be worse. WellÉ it is reported that the authorities in Hyderabad, India have taken to employing bands of wedding drummers to turn up at the houses of defaulters and 'play until they pay'. 20% of the city's tax arrears have poured in as twenty bands go on tour. Following the UK merger of the Revenue with Customs, there may be some reallocation of staff to the drumming unit.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, it was reported that a bank robber was allowed to deduct the cost of his gun in calculating the taxable profits of his crimes. This has prompted a debate about whether the Revenue should be sending tax returns to criminals, or whether the state should not enjoy a percentage of the profits of crime. Of course, it was the Internal Revenue Service in the USA who finally put Al Capone in jail for tax evasion.

The lesson: when buying the equipment for your break-in, be sure to get a VAT receipt!
